SUSTAINABLE ART

Nature has been a source of inspiration for artists for centuries. The art world is a series of connections from prehistoric murals to landscapes and seascapes in contemporary art. In recent years, however, nature has been confronted with a rise in sea levels, worldwide forest fires and the degradation of ecosystems, as a result of which artists are also being confronted with the ever-increasing and inescapable effects of the climate crisis.

By reflecting on these ecological hazards, many contemporary artists have become climate activists, using their work as a platform to raise awareness and focus on realizing a more sustainable future. While the isolated world is a strange situation this year to say the least, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that global, collective action against existential threats is possible. Art can give us hope, light the way and force us to act.

Giardino gallery presents a contemporary young artist who is committed to a sustainable future, Adrienn Újházi from Novi Sad, Serbia. Adrienn researchs natural materials within biomimetic science in order to invent, improve and make more sustainable the best biological ideas in nature and its human applications.

Adrienn creates abstract artworks from 100% biodegradable material, called "SCOBY". Biodegradable materials are becoming an increasingly important substitute for plastics, for example. By presenting her artworks, she creates an accessibility to this material, in order to make the viewer aware of natural shapes and structures that can be applied in the future.
